Ask any glass manufacturer, supplier or processor worth its salt: tempered glass is tough as nails.

It's this toughness – up to five times stronger than standard annealed glass – that makes it such a critical material in so many applications. But tough or not, can it scratch?

The short answer is yes. But just as tempered glass is stronger than standard glass, so it's more scratch-resistant, too.

When buying tempered glass for a building project, it's important to transport and install it carefully to avoid scratches. And once installed, it's important to be mindful not to damage the glass.

How to safely transport tempered glass

Once the glass is in your hands, you need to ensure it's transported safely. This involves keeping it upright, keeping the panes separated in the vehicle and keeping the cargo securely strapped in place.

We've covered the topic in more detail in our guide to how glass is transported. Following these simple steps can help ensure your tempered glass isn't scratched before it arrives on-site.

How to safely install tempered glass

When installing tempered glass, your installers need to be careful not to cause scratches. This means wearing proper protective personal equipment (PPE), following best practice with regards to carrying and lifting and using tools such as suction cups.

Installers must also be careful not to knock the glass into other objects. Any scratches caused during the installation process will need to be removed. In the worst-case scenario, the materials will have to be replaced.

How can you remove scratches from tempered glass?

We answered this question in detail in another of our glass guides. Scratches can be removed from tempered glass with toothpaste, liquid pumice soap, steel wool or buffers and sanders.

Whichever method you choose, you'll need to buff the glass with small, circular motions. Anything more vigorous could make the problem worse.

How can you protect tempered glass?

Once tempered glass has been installed, there are simple steps you can take to protect it.

The first is to dust it regularly. Make sure you use non-abrasive cloths and scrubbers for this task.

Secondly, you need to be careful not to knock into the glass. Bumps and knocks are the primary causes of scratches on tempered glass.

If you're procuring tempered glass for a project or overseeing its installation, you can't guarantee people will look after it in the long run. But you can take precautions during the transportation and installation processes and encourage your team to take care.
